Copayments are fixed dollar amounts you’re responsible for paying for covered appointments, services, medical equipment, or prescriptions.
Copayments (or copays) are fixed dollar amounts (e.g. $20) you’re responsible for paying for a covered (opens in new tab) appointment, service, durable medical equipment, or prescription (opens in new tab). Your copay amount will vary depending on the type of service or item you receive. Your insurance plan’s Schedule of Benefits (opens in new tab) outlines what your copays for each type of care.
Copayments often come into effect after you’ve met your deductible (opens in new tab), and apply toward your out-of-pocket max (opens in new tab). Some plans also include copayments pre-deductible as well.
In most instances, you'll be required to pay your copayment up front when you go in for an appointment or your doctor orders a drug or piece of equipment.
