As you shop for health coverage this Open Enrollment there is one important thing to remember: What you need from your health plan can look very different depending on where you are in life.
For example, managing diabetes may mean needing more support between doctor visits, while menopause can bring an entirely new set of healthcare needs. For some people, being able to get care in Spanish makes the system easier to understand and navigate. And approaching retirement before 65 can raise a new question altogether: how do you stay covered until Medicare begins?
Your needs can change with your health, your family and your stage of life. Health coverage should be able to meet you there.
“That’s the thinking behind Oscar’s approach to coverage for 2027,” said Lia Gass Rodriguez, Chief Health Officer at Oscar Insurance. “We’re being purposeful in designing plans and benefits around the lives people are actually living, rather than assuming the same plan works equally well for everyone.”
Health insurance for chronic conditions
For someone living with a chronic or complex condition, healthcare doesn’t stop when the doctor’s appointment ends. There are prescriptions to fill, labs to schedule, and decisions to make in between.
Oscar plans such as Diabetes Care, Chronic Care plansandBreathe Easy are designed around those day-to-day realities, with benefits and support tailored to particular health needs.
That kind of support matters when managing your health is something you think about every day and not just at your annual physical. Tailoring a plan to a health condition can be surprisingly practical. For someone with diabetes, that might mean $0 routine diabetes care such as diabetic eye and foot exams, labs and endocrinologist visits. And for someone living with COPD or asthma, it can include $0 pulmonologist visits, pulmonary function tests, pulmonary rehab and oxygen.
“The idea is to look at the care someone is likely to need to manage their condition over time, and design benefits around those needs, rather than making them navigate a general-purpose plan on their own,” Rodriguez explained.
Health coverage for menopause
Some stages of life bring health needs that haven’t always received enough attention. Menopause is one example. One study found that 93% of perimenopausal women and 84% of menopausal women agreed that the healthcare experience should be more personalized to better address women’s healthcare needs.
Oscar’s HelloMeno plans are built specifically for women navigating perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause. That means looking at the care women may actually need during this stage of life and designing benefits around it: from $0 primary care, gynecologist and behavioral health visits to $0 bone-density scans and certain lab work. The plan also covers certain medications at $0, including hormone replacement therapy and SSRIs, and connects members with healthcare providers who specialize in menopause care.
“It’s the best kind of personalization,” Rodriguez explained. “Instead of expecting women to piece together menopause care on their own, the plan brings more of the relevant providers, treatments and benefits into the coverage itself.”
Spanish-language health insurance and care
Personalized healthcare also means recognizing that people don’t all experience the healthcare system in the same language or cultural context.
A 2025 Urban Institute study found that 1 in 4 Spanish-speaking adults had difficulty finding providers who spoke Spanish or offered interpretation. Eighty-three percent said access to providers who speak their language or provide translation was important.
Oscar’s Buena Salud offers a Spanish-first member experience designed to make healthcare easier to understand, navigate and use. Members have access to Spanish-speaking healthcare providers, a dedicated Spanish-speaking customer service team and communications in Spanish, along with health programs tailored to their needs. The experience was developed by native Spanish speakers with cultural, linguistic and regional differences across Hispanic and Latino communities in mind.
“It’s an example of what culturally responsive coverage can look like in practice,” Rodriguez said. “Not simply making healthcare information available in another language, but designing more of the experience around the people using it.”
Health insurance for early retirees
Retirement doesn’t always line up neatly with Medicare eligibility. For someone who leaves the workforce before 65, figuring out how to stay covered and what that coverage will cost can become an important part of the retirement calculation.
For 2027, Oscar is introducing RetireEase, a new plan designed specifically for early retirees ages 55 to 64. Initially planned for Arizona, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas, the plan is meant to help bridge the years between employer-sponsored coverage and Medicare.
The benefits are designed around the kinds of care someone may use regularly during this stage of life. Depending on the plan, members can pay predictable $0–$35 copays for primary care visits, lab work and physical therapy starting on day one, without having to meet their deductible first. Tier 1a prescriptions are available for $0, while physical therapy and chiropractic benefits are designed to help members stay active and mobile. The plans also offer access to specialists such as cardiologists and orthopedists with fixed copays.
“RetireEase is designed to make routine healthcare costs easier to anticipate while still providing financial protection against larger medical expenses,” Rodriguez said.
Medical, dental, vision, and supplemental
Sometimes personalization isn’t about needing a specialized plan. It’s about making the pieces of healthcare work better together.
Medical, dental and vision coverage have traditionally been separate experiences, even though your oral health, eyesight and overall health don’t exist in separate boxes.
For 2027, Oscar is introducing integrated medical, dental and vision plans in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. Members can get medical coverage, preventive dental care, annual eye exams and vision benefits through one plan, one account and one member experience.
For someone shopping for coverage, that means fewer separate pieces to manage and a health plan that more closely reflects how you actually take care of yourself.
Consumers in Florida and Texas can add supplemental cash-pay options to any Oscar plan through a new partnership with Allstate Health Solutions. These low-cost options help cover medical bills from accidents, serious illnesses, or hospital stays.
Find health insurance that fits your life
When you’re shopping for health insurance, it’s easy to focus on the numbers: the monthly premium, the deductible, the copay. Those things matter. So do your doctors and prescriptions.
But there’s another question worth asking: What will I actually need from my health plan this year?
Think about the care you use regularly, the support that would make healthcare easier to navigate and what might be changing in your life. Maybe you want more help managing a health condition. Perhaps you’re looking for care that reflects your language or a particular stage of life. Or, you may just want fewer pieces of your healthcare to manage.
That’s what finding the right coverage should come down to. Not finding a health plan built for everyone, but finding one that works for you.
