Skilled nursing

Skilled nursing refers to care provided by licensed medical professionals. The services they provide are needed temporarily to support recovery from illness or injury. Skilled nursing care can be provided in a variety of setting, including skilled nursing facilities (nursing homes), hospitals, or at home.

The four key types of skilled nursing professionals are:

• Nurses, who provide post-operative wound care or administer IV therapy and injections.
• Physical Therapists, who help build strength and balance.
• Occupational Therapists, who help people regain their independence in dressing, eating, and personal hygiene.
• Speech Therapists, who help people speak and swallow after a stroke or other brain injury.
