Open Enrollment is the period when individuals and families can enroll in health insurance plans in the individual marketplace.
Open Enrollment is the period every year when individuals and families can enroll in health insurance plans in the individual Marketplace.
During Open Enrollment, individuals and families can change health plans, enroll for the first time, or update their application to apply for subsidies to help pay for health insurance.
When is Open Enrollment? In most states, it starts on November 1, and ends on January 15*. If you experience a qualifying life event (opens in new tab) outside of Open Enrollment (like getting married or losing health insurance through an employer), you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (opens in new tab) that would allow you to sign up for an individual health plan outside of Open Enrollment. You typically have 60 days to choose a plan and enroll.
Also keep in mind that Medicaid (opens in new tab) and the Children's Health Insurance Program (opens in new tab) (aka CHIP) are available year-round. If you participate in a group health insurance plan through your job, your enrollment period may be different from that of the individual marketplace.
If you're looking for a new health insurance plan this Open Enrollment, or if you have a qualifying life event (opens in new tab), get started by getting a free personalized quote (opens in new tab).
*Open Enrollment begins on 11/16 in NY. Open Enrollment ends on 1/31 in NJ and NY.
