A coverage area is a specific region where a health insurer’s members can get covered care under their plan.
A coverage area (also called service area) is a specific region where a health insurer’s members can get covered care under their plan. The insurance company contracts with doctors, medical groups, pharmacies, and hospitals in this area to guarantee in-network (opens in new tab) rates for its members. For EPO or HMO plans (opens in new tab), you have to live within a coverage area in order to sign up for an insurance policy.
Word to the wise: If you move out of a coverage area during the middle of the year, you may not be able to keep your current health plan. Check with your insurance provider to see what they recommend. If your insurance provider doesn’t have coverage in your new hometown, don’t worry – you’ll have 60 days to find a new plan during a Special Enrollment period (opens in new tab).
