On August 31, 2022, the FDA updated its emergency use authorizations (EUAs) of the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. It authorized the use of bivalent formulations (formulas that target two strains of COVID-19) of the vaccines for use as a single booster dose, at least two months following primary or booster vaccination. The updated booster shots target the original strain of SARS-CoV-2, as well as Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5.
There have been many updates about COVID-19 vaccines and boosters since the start of the pandemic, and it can be hard to stay current on the latest information. That’s why we asked Dr. Trina Bogart, a board certified Emergency Physician and Senior Medical Director at Oscar, some questions about the new booster shot. Check out her responses below.
Why were new booster shots created?
The new booster vaccines target the Omicron variants BA-4 and BA-5, which are currently the most prevalent viral strains circulating in the U.S. These vaccines also target the original COVID strain. Immunity from the vaccines wanes over time, therefore, in order to have the best protection against infection, severe illness, and death, a booster is recommended.
Who should get the latest booster shots?
The CDC recommends (opens in new tab) that everyone ages 12 years and older get an updated COVID-19 booster shot, after it has been at least 2 months since their previous vaccine to help restore protection that has decreased since their last vaccine. This booster provides improved protection against newer variants.
The Pfizer booster shot is authorized for all people 12 years and older, and the Moderna booster shot is authorized for all people 18 years and older. People are eligible to get the shot as long as it has been at least 2 months since their last booster or COVID-19 vaccine dose. Those who have recently had a COVID-19 infection should wait 3 months before getting a booster. Individuals with who are elderly, immunocompromised, or have a chronic condition should be sure to get this booster as they are at greater risk for severe infection or death.
