Open enrollment is the time to choose health coverage for the year ahead. For households across Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas, that choice often happens around the kitchen table, between work, school, family responsibilities, and includes a budget that has to stretch.
In Texas, more than 5.7 million people (ages 18-64) speak Spanish at home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And health insurance can feel especially hard when plan information, support, or care is not available in the language that feels most natural. This open enrollment, choose coverage that fits the care your household expects to use, helps you prepare for the unexpected, and is easier to understand and use when you need it most.
“Choosing health coverage shouldn’t mean navigating a language barrier,” said Gisela Salazar, Texas market manager at Oscar Insurance. “During open enrollment, we encourage Texans to ask questions, understand their options, and choose coverage that fits their family’s everyday needs and helps prepare them for the unexpected.”
Start with coverage you can understand
To make an informed decision about health coverage, start by understanding the terms you’ll see as you compare plans. Words like, premium, deductible, copay, and out-of-pocket max describe what you will pay and how your coverage works. Oscar’s glossary of common healthcare insurance terminology explains these clearly, with a Spanish version to help you understand your options.
Language support matters beyond just shopping for or choosing a plan. You should be able to understand a bill, ask a question, and make decisions about care without having to rely on someone else to translate.
Oscar offers Spanish-speaking members Hola Oscar, a program that provides access to Spanish-speaking providers, customer service, and more. For Texans who receive employer-sponsored coverage through CHOICE Arrangements (Formerly ICHRA) Buena Salud offers Spanish communications, Spanish-speaking customer service, and access to Spanish-speaking healthcare providers as well.
Look at the year you just had
Before you compare plans, think about what healthcare looked like for your household this last year.
Maybe you found a doctor you trust. Maybe a child needed urgent care, or your spouse began taking a new medicine, or you or someone in your family were recently diagnosed with a chronic condition. Those experiences can help you decide what matters most in the year ahead.
Write down the doctors, prescriptions, and types of care your household uses. Include any care you already expect to need, such as a specialist visit, pregnancy care, physical therapy, or ongoing treatment for a chronic health condition, like diabetes or asthma.
Don’t just look at the monthly payment
Your insurance premium, the monthly cost for your health insurance plan, is important – but it is only one part of the cost of healthcare.
Some health plans cost less each month. But when you go to the doctor or fill a prescription, you may have to pay more. These plans can be a good choice for people who are young, healthy, and do not expect to need medical care often.
Other plans cost more each month. But when you or someone in your household needs care, you may pay less for doctor visits, prescriptions, medical equipment, and other services. These plans can be a good choice for households that expect to use healthcare more often.

If you shop through the Marketplace, estimate your household income for 2027 carefully. That estimate can affect whether you qualify for savings. This is especially important if your income changes through freelance work, overtime, seasonal work, or a new job.
Make sure care is close and covered
In a state as large as Texas, a plan’s network of healthcare providers matters. The doctors, hospitals, and specialists available through one health insurance plan may differ by metro area, county, or ZIP code.
Before you enroll, check whether your preferred doctors and hospitals are in the plan’s network. Review your prescriptions, too. Confirming these details now can prevent surprises later.
Oscar’s network in Texas includes familiar local names. Check the specific plan’s provider directory to confirm that your preferred hospital and doctors participate.
Match your plan to the care you need
Consider the needs that could shape your costs during the year. Approximately 1 in 8 adults in Texas are living with diabetes. If diabetes is part of your household’s health story, Oscar’s Diabetes Care plans may be worth comparing. They are available in Texas and are designed around routine diabetes care, specialists, labs, and prescriptions.
Some Texas households may also want coverage that keeps more of their everyday care under one plan. Oscar offers medical plans with dental and vision built in in Texas, including preventive dental care and annual eye exams, all in one premium
And for families concerned about the cost of the unexpected, eligible Oscar medical plans in Texas can be paired with supplemental coverage through Allstate Health Solutions. That coverage can provide cash benefits to help with expenses related to accidents, critical illnesses, or hospital stays.
The goal is to choose coverage your household can understand, use, and afford when care is needed.
“Spanish-speaking Texans deserve health coverage they can understand from the start – not just when it’s time to use it,” Salazar said. “At Oscar, that means offering clear information and support in Spanish while helping families find coverage that fits their stage of life, health needs, and budget.”
