You’re almost out of your daily medication, and your doctor’s next available appointment is two weeks away. Or, you notice an itchy rash over the weekend and don’t want to wait until your appointment next month or go to urgent care in person to know whether it needs treatment.
Virtual care can help in moments like these, giving you access to a provider when you need support between visits with your regular doctor. Oscar Virtual Care1 works alongside your local doctor, giving you support between appointments.
Here’s how easy it is:
Keep your local doctor
Your primary care doctor gets to know your health over time. They help you manage ongoing conditions, stay on top of preventive care, and make decisions about your long-term health. That relationship matters.
Virtual care adds support around it. When your doctor isn’t available, a virtual provider can assess your concern, recommend treatment when appropriate, and help you figure out what needs to happen next.
Sometimes an issue can be fully handled virtually. Other times, you’ll need an in-person visit to follow-up. Either way, you have someone to help you sort out the next step.
Virtual care helps with routine needs that come up between doctor’s appointments. Oscar Virtual Care can help with:
Everyday illnesses and symptoms: Get guidance for concerns like colds, allergies, pink eye, or a rash.
Mental health support: Get help connecting with mental health care when you need it.
Prescription needs: Get a new prescription or refill an ongoing medication, including a 90-day supply when appropriate. Your provider will review your needs to determine whether a prescription is right for you.
Lab work and results: A virtual provider can order appropriate tests at a local lab, review the results, and explain what comes next.
Support for ongoing conditions: Get guidance between appointments, including medication reviews and help identifying follow-up care you may need.
Preventive care planning: Talk through screenings you may be due for and get help taking the next step.
Care while traveling within the United States: Access virtual support for issues that come up when you are away from home.
You can get help with an immediate need using Oscar Virtual Care and still follow up with your regular doctor as planned.
Keeping your doctor informed
When you request your virtual visit, make sure that you’ve added your regular doctor’s contact information so we can share your records. Mention recent appointments, medications, allergies, and any changes in your health, too. Your virtual care team may have access to your prescription history (from your Oscar health plan) and health information you’ve shared, but they may not be able to see every record from every doctor.
Before you wrap up your visit, make sure you know:
Whether you need a follow-up appointment, and with whom.
How information from the visit, prescription changes, and any results from tests ordered in your visit can be shared with your regular doctor.
If a medication changes, make sure that you also let your regular doctor know so they have that information at your next appointment.
Getting started
Log into your Oscar account or open the mobile app to request care. Oscar Virtual Care is available 24/7, including weekends and holidays, with phone, video, or message-based options.
Before you get care, check your plan’s benefits and costs. A virtual visit and the services ordered during it can have different costs. Check out Oscar’s cost estimate tool by signing into your member account to understand the cost of prescriptions, labs, imaging, or in-person follow-up care.
Keep that next appointment with your local primary care doctor. And if a health question or prescription need comes up before then, you have another option right in your Oscar account.
