As an ultrasound student, Nicole was training to be the 'eyes and ears' of the medical system. She never expected that her own classroom lessons would lead to a life-changing diagnosis of her own.

Nicole’s path into healthcare wasn’t a straight line. After an attempt at nursing in 2014, she felt like something was missing from her life. She eventually found her way back to the medical field through sonography, drawn to the idea of being the one who catches things early.
"I like the idea that I can still help people and it’s super important to have medical imaging and it catches things quickly," she says. "So I was like, I'm going to give it a shot."
She didn't realize that her education would soon lead to the most important catch of her life.
A routine class changes everything
In the fall of 2025, the textbook came to life. During a training session, her teacher was scanning the vessels in her upper arm and noticed something unusual: swollen lymph nodes in the armpit area.
Because Nicole’s class had just finished studying breast cancer pathology, both student and teacher knew immediately that they weren't looking at a normal scan. "As I'm looking at it on the screen, we’re both like, ‘Hmm, this doesn’t look good,’" Nicole recalls. By the time they confirmed the diagnosis, it was already Stage 3.
Facing the financial cost of cancer
The clinical diagnosis was only half the battle. As a full-time student, Nicole had put her earning power on pause, leaving her husband to shoulder the household bills. The fear of "insane" medical debt began to feel as heavy as the diagnosis itself.
"I’ve always heard so many nightmare stories of people being like, ‘Man, the charges for cancer care are insane,’" Nicole says. "I was just thinking, 'Oh my god, I might have to put a pause on school.' It was all these different stressful things coming up."
Finding care on her own terms
Nicole needed a healthcare partner that could move as fast as she did. Rather than waiting on a backlogged referral system, she used the Oscar app to take control of her timeline.
By doing her own research through Oscar's network tools, she found providers that could get her in for vital imaging weeks sooner than her initial referrals. "I was able to kind of just on my own through Oscar do research of different places in my network... it was just so much easier for me."
A "beautiful surprise"
The turning point in Nicole's journey wasn't just finding a doctor. It was the moment the "nightmare stories" about insurance failed to come true.
Before she could even spiral into worry about her specialty chemo drugs, a letter arrived: every single one was approved. "I've never, never seen this happen," she says. "I was like, 'Wait, doesn't that mean they'll be covered?'"
When the first infusion bill arrived, the reality of her coverage hit home. A $65,000 bill was reduced to $5,000.
Having hit her out-of-pocket maximum, Nicole realized her future wouldn't be defined by debt. "I might actually get out of this and not have some crazy amount of debt looming over me for years,” she said. “I feel lucky."

For Nicole, Oscar transformed from a policy into a silent advocate. "There’s somebody on the other side of that approval, right? I don’t know who to thank, but somebody saw that and was like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ God bless that person."
By removing the financial "mental gymnastics," Nicole was able to focus on what matters most: her health and her future in the career she fought so hard to find. "The last thing you want to think about is how much you have to pay... it's been a really beautiful surprise."
