You already use your smartphone to manage the most important things in your life. Your email, calendar, boarding passes, Snapchat—they’re all on your phone. Why can’t you manage your health there, too?
The truth is, building an app for healthcare is a lot more complicated than an app for crushing candies or swiping left. When something’s wrong, you might deal with a hospital, pharmacy, doctor’s offices, and labs, to name a few. All these providers’ systems don’t necessarily talk to each other, which causes major data challenges.
That’s why our founders created an insurance company in the first place—to bring all this data together with technology to build a better experience. Each feature in our app is designed to solve a key problem with the old way of managing healthcare, providing the kind of simple, straightforward experience consumers expect.
These six key features make it easy for our members get care and manage their health. We think they raise the bar for what 21st-century care should be.
1. Find doctors in the Oscar network.
Search for care based on your symptoms, or search for doctors by specialty, then filter the results by age, experience, language, and location. A map view shows you who is nearby, which matters when it’s urgent. You can also search for a specific provider or facility to confirm they’re in the Oscar network.
In the background, we’ve created sophisticated processes to keep provider contact info accurate and up-to-date so you never fall down a Google rabbit hole trying to find the right phone number or address.
2. Talk to a doctor whenever you want for free.
Many common conditions like UTIs, eye conditions, rashes, or the flu can be treated over the phone—you don’t even have to get out of bed. Request a call in the app any time, even at 3 a.m., and you can talk to a real live doctor instead of googling your symptoms or schlepping to the clinic in person.
3. Connect with your concierge team.
Because health information is private, you can’t just email or text a customer service rep or doctor to discuss your health. But getting answers doesn’t have to be a hassle. With the app, you can send a secure message to your concierge team 24/7 with questions about benefits, claims, or doctors. You can also call directly from the app without wasting time tracking down the right phone number.
4. Review your health history and profile.
Reviewing your health history shouldn’t involve rummaging around for old billing statements and receipts. The app keeps track of all your activity since you signed up.
The health history timeline shows your doctor visits, labs, diagnoses, and drugs in chronological order. You can use it to check the date of your last physical, review notes from your last call with a doctor, or find claims so you can know what to expect when you get a bill.
The health profile keeps track of all your lab results and Rx details. You can check prescription names and dosages, track refills, and see which vaccines you’re up to date on, all in one place.
5. Pay your bill.
You’re able to upload checks to our bank account from your phone, so why can’t you pay your premium on mobile, too? Now you can. The app lets you set up recurring payments so you never miss a due date, or make one-off payments with your checking account or debit card.
6. Access your virtual ID card.
If you’re visiting a doctor’s office or pharmacy for the first time, they’ll often ask you to share a copy of your ID card. In addition to your physical ID card, you can use the app to access a virtual card anytime, anywhere. You can even save a copy to your Camera Roll to email directly to your doctor—no fax machine required.
If you don’t have mobile access, don't worry. You can use these features online at hioscar.com (opens in new tab), or give your concierge team a call at 855-672-2755 for help.
